Assam’s Barak Valley has a substantial Bengali-reading population, and the state’s press publishes in Bengali, Assamese and English side by side. Coverage of the North East rarely reaches national Indian or Bangladeshi papers in any depth, so these titles are often the only source.
The Bengali press of the Barak Valley — centred on Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi — grew out of a readership with close historical ties to Sylhet, and its papers still cover both sides of that border more closely than either national press does. Assamese-language dailies published from Guwahati carry the state politics that shapes those districts.
