About Daily Prothom Alo
Prothom Alo is the largest Bengali-language newspaper in Bangladesh by both print circulation and online readership, and its website has for years been the most visited Bengali-language site anywhere. It launched in November 1998 under Matiur Rahman, who has edited it ever since — an unusually long continuity for a Bangladeshi masthead.
Editorially it sits in the mainstream centre: heavy on investigative and rural reporting, with a long-running interest in education, public health and local government spending. The op-ed page is widely syndicated and its Friday magazine, along with the sister titles Kishor Alo and Bigyan Chinta, gave the group a foothold with younger readers that most competitors never matched.
Alongside the newspaper, Mediastar publishes Protichinta and runs the book imprint Prothoma Prokashan. An English edition operates at en.prothomalo.com, and weekly North America and Gulf editions are printed abroad for expatriate readers.
